Présentation :
Orthopedic treatment for Class III malocclusions has often been reduced to correcting incisor overjet and addressing transverse underdevelopment. This two-dimensional view of orthopedics is incomplete yet—unfortunately—universal, as is the underlying orthopedic technique known by the acronyms RME+FM.
Systemic orthopedics differs from this approach by aiming, above all, to restore the primary function of the dental arches: mastication. Indeed, morphological corrections—maxillary advancement and expansion—are subordinate to masticatory function; restoring this function requires reorienting the occlusal plane to correct its pathological vertical inclination, making systemic orthopedics “naturally” three-dimensional.
Correcting the occlusal plane, combined with establishing symmetrical Class I arch relationships, creates the occlusal conditions necessary for optimal mandibular proprioception. The central nervous system requires this proprioception to master the complex mechanics of mastication, which, in turn, ensures the stability and long-term success of the corrections.
